Guide to Remodelling
The most important thing to remember, when attempting a project of any size, is PLANNING. Don't do anything physical until you've determined whether it's actually possible! All too often people think they have a great idea and go straight ahead with purchasing materials and ripping out furniture, only to find out too far in that the dimensions are wrong, quantities are insufficient, or that the idea itself worked better in their head than in reality. All of this leads inevitably to spiralling costs and no end of unnecessary stress.
Have a good, hard inspection of the area you want to work on. Look at the spaces involved, the materials in place. Will it stand up to the modifications you have in mind? Are there structural issues you ned to consider? Will it interfere with other features in the area or hinder access in any way? Will it require power, and is this viable?
The list is not exhaustive, of course - it's merely to give you an idea of the kind of things to be thinking about and addressing before you make any physical alterations you can't take back. Your projects will vary in all kinds of ways, but as long as you have thought about the factors involved, your preparation will bear fruit.
You should then take as many measurements as possible, comparing them to the ones in your project as it stands on paper. This way not only will you able to determine how much you'll require in the way of any materials, but you'll also be able to spot any possible issues of scale that may arise.
Once the planning has been rigorously performed and inspected, you should then start looking into who can do the job for you. Unless you are highly experienced, it's not worth the risk of doing it yourself! Leave it to the professionals - it will likely cost less in the long run and be far more apt to live up to your expectations.
When looking for a specialist, make sure to set a maximum budget and try to stick to it except in exceptional circumstances. Get as many quotes as you can, and don't jump at the cheapest offers! There are plenty of low-priced firms that will cut corners left and right. We've all heard the stories - don't jump straight in! If in doubt, go by the horse's mouth. Ask other people about what experiences they have had, and who they would recommend. By the same token, don't pay over the odds, expecting to automatically get top-notch work. Get as much information as possible from as many sources you can find before committing!
In closing, the most important things to remember are planning, preparation and research. These should make up the near-entirety of the project. This done, you can turn over the reins to the specialists.
